I was still unable to connect to Carbonite today (sigh, whatever, stupid power outages), but finally found an .asd file from November 5 that had a goodly amount of what all the other files were missing that I could open and save properly. So Breath of Stone is alive once again. :)

Honestly, I have NO idea what happened to the original file. It's as if it and two other files that happened to be open at the same time just vanished.

Isn't it? I mean, the only indication the file ever *existed* was the one auto-recovery file.

Yay! (for recovery of the found file)!
Blergh! (for whatever dinosaur-level file die-off event happened in the first place)!
Anyway, I'm glad you have recovered much, though I wish you had recovered (& that you still may recover) all that went on walkabout.

I am ever so glad you found the file! And now back it up on a different medium, just in case...

ABSOLUTELY. I got lazy, and Carbonite=dependent. Now the file is on my computer, a jump drive, my Kindle, the Kindle cloud, and at two email addresses. :)

I'm glad you've got almost all of it. Losing access to all that work is one of my nightmares (haha, but I have many nightmares). You know in the olden days, when it was all on paper and people would lose it all in a fire or something? Terrifying. ... Okay but wrenching myself away from the hypnotic gaze of the terror, let me reiterate: good to hear it's almost all recovered!

I must admit, I live in fear of the paper copy I'm working from -- the ONLY copy of previous versions that are becoming Breath of Stone and its sequel -- falling victim to flame and/or flood. I mean, I took a stack of those pages on my camping trip and was far more concerned about their weather-related fate than my own bear-related vulnerabilities. ;-)
