When I blogged about camping alone as a woman, and mentioned bringing weapons, what weapons did you envision?

A BIG stick. And a dog.

You just accurately described a good 75% of my self-defense plan. :)

Of course, since you know how to defend yourself with martial arts, that covers part of your defense, too.

Well, you're in the woods, so I have to suppose at least a knife and a rifle are standard.

RPG.

No, seriously, maybe a bo, or fighting sticks.

I pictured a firearm of some sort, most likely a handgun, because if I recall correctly, you've posted before about carrying a firearm in bear-and-cougar country. I know you have a dog, but I don't count dogs as 'weapons', and he'd probably be less than no help if a bear or cougar came around. I presume you have a stick and a knife - primarily tools rather than weapons, and again, not very effective against a large predator, though better than nothing. Since you teach self-defense, it wouldn't surprise me if you also have pepper spray, which would be effective.

... I didn't recall correctly; it was [livejournal.com profile] bleodswean who posted about that. Sorry; my mistake!

We-ell, I have to admit as a Canadian, I tend to think that when Americans speak of weapons and training, they mean guns of some sort. That may be my failure.

I was picturing some type of big knife, or perhaps a gun. Something useful for camping and as a weapon, or something useful for scaring off both people and animals. I don't consider a stick to be a weapon -- though it can be used as such, I wouldn't name it as one.
