I'm happy with this exchange from near the end of Sand of Bone -- a snippet that, no matter how much I like it, might totally suck out of context. Or in context, for that matter!

"Why?" Shella asked. "What are we doing wrong?"

Katsa shrugged. "The gods decide, sweetling. That's all I know."

"The gods want this to be happening?"

"Or they want something else to happen less."

Shella looked down at the Velshaan curled on the sands, then up to the broad canopy sheltering another Velshaan who still slept, then across the rise to the cavern where Pyrius and his Blades were--for the moment--safe, but trapped. "The gods are cruel, my soulbound."

"The gods are single-minded, my Torshaan."

"What's the difference?"

"If I thought they'd answer, I'd ask them myself."

"There must be something we can do!"

"No, there mustn't. That's the way of the world." But Katsa did offer a dim smile. "We've done everything two dead women could do. What happens now rests in the hands of the living."
